It has been 100 years since the Dolgarrog Dam Disaster took place on November 2nd, 1925. We had a busy week in school taking part in various activities to prepare for the Dolgarrog 100 Commemoration event.

Geirionydd Class had the opportunity to create lanterns which were used as part of the Commemoration Parade. They also had the chance, along with Dosbarth Dulyn, to visit the Community Centre to see the exhibition about the disaster and to ring the church bell — the same bell that rang 100 years ago as the water destroyed the dam. Some of the children also had the opportunity to paint a chrysanthemum flower onto stones in memory of those who lost their lives in the disaster

To finish the week of activities, the BBC came to speak to the children in   Dosbarth Geirionydd about what they had learned, and Ruth Fabby MBE came to talk to them about what she had discovered about the people who lost their lives.

In addition to these activities, we celebrated Freaky Friday. The children came to school in wild costumes and took part in a variety of activities, finishing the day with a disco. Some of the children were unrecognisable in their costumes!

  • children dressed up for halloween and wrapping pupils in toilet rolls to create a mummy

We also had the chance to raise money for the charity Children in Need. The children came to school in their pyjamas and were able to donate money for the opportunity to watch a film in the afternoon. Thank you to everyone who contributed — we managed to raise £240 for the charity.

The children have also been busy in their classes learning and developing their themes:

  • Dosbarth Crafnant have been learning about fireworks, and the Gruffalo has now arrived in their classroom!

  • Dosbarth Melynllyn have been developing their applied maths skills by weighing food for the class shop and estimating how many sweets are in a bag before counting them.

  • Dosbarth Dulyn  had the chance to take part in a First Experiences activity run by Conwy Music Service, where they learned how to develop vocal skills through fun and engaging tasks.

To end the month, we held a Bingo Night to raise money for the Cylch and for the school, and it was lovely to see so much support from families and members of the community.

December will be a short month in school, but a very busy one with a wide variety of activities taking place. We look forward to sharing the news with you before we close for Christmas!
